Educated 03:13
When they come for you You best believe that they’re coming for me too That’s the way they planned it What a fool I’ve been Thrown myself under every bus Just to end up back where I started But I was just a kid Playing with a knife It was an attempt At an exciting life And I was just a boy Wearing funny clothes Anything at all to lose control I was born in the backwoods Tried to change the way I pronounce my words A failed attempt to sound educated And what a fool I’ve been Somehow I never learned to swim Now here I am, stuck in the deep end
2.
Virtue 02:55
I ain’t been sleeping good And all the bad shit in my brain It’s been bleeding me bare And I don’t wanna change The wind is kicking in my ribs And I don’t care If I’m not back tomorrow Won’t you please be concerned? I’m just practicing my sorrow Like it’s another virtue that I’ve earned I watched my heroes cry Until there wasn’t any salt Left to drain And I don’t wanna die I’ve been kicking in my teeth That old familiar pain If I’m not back by nightfall You’d better sound the alarm I’m just working on my downfall Like it’s another tractor in my barn
3.
I sit alone in somebody else’s home It’s just a place I lay my head The stars come out in record amount Looks like another day is dead Don’t shed a tear for me I keep good company The ghosts of everything I did Don’t think you owe me one Buddy, what’s done is done Water under a familiar bridge Most nights I try to write Beneath artificial yellow light The creek roaring in my head I hear the coyote pack Double check that my door is latched And go to sleep in somebody else’s bed
4.
Shotgun 03:00
There’s a shotgun in my head Aimed right behind my eyes And it means to kill me dead But with the moon you know I’ll rise There’s a dancer in my heart Her legs have been torn apart She was always my sweetest friend I just know she’s gonna dance again I can still hear you calling “Nothing’s gonna bring me down” The stars in our eyes are falling In the morning I’ll be back around I can still hear you calling “Nothing’s gonna bring me down” The stars in our eyes are falling I let the music bring me back around There’s a raven in my eyes She’s always been the one When I’m weak, she’s my big surprise She’ll be there when I’m finally done And there’s a shotgun in my head Aimed right behind my eyes And it means to kill me dead With the moon you know I’ll rise
5.
She’s the Queen of Diamonds And I’m just another broken heart She’s out there waiting And I don’t know where to start How do you find something so pure? A love divine, future secure I guess I was knocking at the wrong door She’s a blooming lily And I’m just an old sticker bush She’s a blinking button That I cannot seem to push How do you find something so free? An open mind, unusual to me I guess I was barking up the wrong tree
6.
I’m the pile of bones In the bed of the creek And I’m the hungry ghost You don’t dare to feed And I’m just down here in it And I’m just another restless spirit I’m the smoking gun In a distant land Proof of what you’ve done Shaking in your hand And I didn’t come here to tell ya And I know it seems way too familiar I’m the inside joke You’ve been dying to get Something so wild broke Now you’ve become the pet And I’m just a labor of love And I’m a golden gift from above
7.
Telecaster 03:36
I’ve been barely holding on Using only my brain and brawn But it ain’t gonna change how I feel I can play 300 shows Back to back in a fucking row And it ain’t gonna get me a deal And I don’t wanna be home no more And I don’t always want to be on tour With a telecaster in my hand Get your ass back in the van All the big shots trying half as hard They’re gonna make it twice as far As me and my country loving boys And I just want my songs to stand At least somewhat of a chance Before my ambition gets destroyed And I don’t wanna be home no more And I don’t always wanna be on tour With a telecaster in my hand Get my ass back in the van I’ve been barely holding on To the telecaster in my hand
8.
Paradise 03:05
Sold you all paradise Sitting beside a pretty blonde girl in a fast car Now I just feel so paralyzed Kept moving west in search of a bigger star Took way too long to realize Home is above exactly where you are How many beers to harmonize? Spilled my guts in a million shitty bars And I don’t wanna feel like that again I don’t wanna feel Took way too long to make it end I don’t wanna feel like that again They sold it as a country mile It keeps getting longer all the time Sit down and talk a while Let your burdens become mine And smile like a crocodile Dare them to cross that fuckin’ line It’s never going out of style Hurtin’ others is too lucrative a crime
9.
I’m the sinner and the son Raising hell when the work is done You may expect I have regret But I won’t be needing none I”m the sinner and the son I’m the water and the wine Staying clean come toasting time Half my life I drank to die Now my throat it remains dry I’m the water and the wine I’m the bucket and the boot One day I’m gonna kick it to the moon In my mind I’m feeling fine But I know the reaper’s coming soon I’m the bucket and the boot I’m the hunter and the prey Pretty soon will come the day That the curse it gets reversed You’ll lay those flowers on my grave I’m the hunter and the prey I’m the sinner and the son I’m the water and the wine I’m the bucket and the boot I’m the bucket and the boot
10.
The Blues 03:05
Ring of smoke in my mirror I don’t want to burn alive What was I thinking, lost daydreaming That I could finally be alright They all gathered in their basements The boys are gonna teach you the blues But I’ve been learning since I’ve been breathing I could show you a trick or two Sliver of sunlight in the morning Tries to melt away my bones Why was I running, always towards nothing Swimming with a pocket full of stones I let the moonlight bring my baby Down the mountain, back to me I’m always wanting all her loving It gets me higher than the trees
11.
It’s a shock to the system Can’t undo what has been done And I’ve been working on my promises Broken-horned and silver-tongued It’s an arrow in a target Maybe a knife in the back And I’ve been chewing on my punishment Like it’s a welcomed snack So wipe that smile from your conscious And punch your brother in the gut What kind of shit you been reading Made you think you’d be enough? Is there champagne up in heaven Or just a plate slid through a cell? I don’t know how I’m supposed to make it If I can’t raise a little hell

A special thanks to Warren, Duane, Lee, Jason, Justin and Jordan for their amazing contributions. This record doesn't exist without you. We'd also like to thank our families, our loving & supportive partners, our musical brethren far & wide, and everyone who keeps gas in the tank by coming to shows, buying merch, and giving us a place to rest our heads on the road.

A note from the songwriter:
Most of these songs were written while living off the grid in the Monongahela National Forest in Tucker County, West Virginia. My creative output during that period owes a lot to the local wildlife, water and woods. I would like to personally thank Red Run, the Dry Fork of the Cheat River, Otter Creek, the cranberry bog, red foxes, the local coyote pack, red-tailed hawks, brook trout, and all of the spirits who linger there. I would also like to acknowledge that this land was primarily occupied by the Shawnee and Massawomeck tribes long before any of us laid eyes upon its beauty.

about

Tucker Riggleman & The Cheap Dates Morgantown, West Virginia

“Musically, 'Shotgun' sounds like the result of Steve Earle hopping on stage with Big Star in a dimly lit dive bar with a healthy dose of early Old 97’s. Riggleman’s voice rings with a prophetic honesty over overdriven guitar chords. The song’s mid-tempo lilt sounds like the open road."
